Overview & Abstract

Living cells routinely perform complex, highly parallelized computations at remarkably low energy costs. Indeed, unicellular organisms display cognitive-like behaviors, such as habituation and associative learning, without a nervous system. However, the fundamental biological mechanisms governing cellular information processing remain largely unknown.

The inaugural Cellular Intelligence Meeting aims to convene the Swiss scientific community interested in how living organisms incorporate, process and memorize information, introducing an information-centric paradigm to biology. The underlying "wetware" includes dynamic, information-rich biological structures such as proteins, cytoplasm, regulatory networks, and tissues. We strive to bring together a multidisciplinary community across biology, chemistry, soft matter physics, materials science, interested in experimental work, theoretical modeling, and computational biology.

Key Questions

  1. How do cells and organisms compute?
  2. How does living matter store information?
  3. Can biological wetware learn?
